Rebuilding Together Greater Florida (RTGFL), in collaboration with Farm Share, Sunshine Health, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, successfully hosted a large-scale drive-thru hurricane preparedness event on Saturday, June 7th at Raymond James Stadium. Despite the early start, a steady stream of vehicles lined up, demonstrating the community’s eagerness to prepare for the 2025 hurricane season.

The collaborative effort proved to be a resounding success, with hundreds of families receiving free hurricane preparedness kits. Each kit contained essential items designed to help residents navigate the initial aftermath of a storm, including nonperishable food, flashlights with batteries, phone chargers, portable fans, and sturdy reusable bags to carry supplies.

“We are thrilled with the turnout and the positive response from the community,” said Jose Garcia, CEO of RTGFL. “Seeing so many families take proactive steps to prepare for hurricane season underscores the importance of events like these. We are incredibly grateful to our partners, Farm Share, Sunshine Health, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, for their invaluable support in making this a reality.”

Volunteers from all participating organizations worked tirelessly throughout the morning, efficiently distributing the kits with smiles and helpful information. The atmosphere was one of community spirit and shared responsibility for ensuring the safety and well-being of Tampa Bay residents.

The event directly aligns with RTGFL’s ongoing commitment to building safer and more resilient communities, particularly for those most vulnerable to the impacts of natural disasters. With forecasts predicting an active hurricane season in 2025, having basic emergency supplies readily available can significantly impact a family’s ability to cope during and after a storm.

While supplies were substantial, they were in high demand, and the distribution continued until all kits were given out. The success of this event serves as a powerful reminder of the community’s need for preparedness resources and the effectiveness of collaborative efforts in addressing those needs.

RTGFL and its partners are proud to have played a role in helping Tampa Bay residents take crucial steps towards hurricane preparedness. As the 2025 hurricane season progresses, the knowledge and supplies gained at this event will undoubtedly contribute to a more resilient and prepared community.

Building Strength, One Home at a Time: RTGFL Kicks Off Hurricane Season Focused on Resilience https://rtgfl.org/building-strength-one-home-at-a-time-rtgfl-kicks-off-hurricane-season-focused-on-resilience/ https://rtgfl.org/building-strength-one-home-at-a-time-rtgfl-kicks-off-hurricane-season-focused-on-resilience/#respond Fri, 30 May 2025 12:02:19 +0000 https://rtgfl.org/?p=4090 As the official start of the 2025 hurricane season looms, Rebuilding Together Greater Florida (RTGFL) is taking proactive steps to ensure Tampa Bay residents are as prepared as possible. On May 28th, in a powerful demonstration of our commitment, we held a news conference in St. Petersburg at the home of Mei Hillard, highlighting the crucial link between resilient homes and community safety.

The event served as the official kickoff of our hurricane season preparedness efforts, and we made a significant announcement that resonated deeply. RTGFL will be undertaking over $30,000 worth of vital repairs to Mei Hillard’s home, addressing damage sustained during last year’s hurricane season. This includes not only fixing the previous damage but also strategically replacing her windows and front door to significantly enhance the home’s resilience against future storms.

This impactful project at Mei’s home is part of a larger effort by RTGFL in Pinellas County, where we have already completed or are currently working on repairs for approximately 50 homes. These projects encompass a range of crucial work, including mucking and gutting, roof repairs, flooring, drywall installation, and other essential fixes to restore safety and stability for homeowners.

During the news conference, we also emphasized that our support extends beyond current projects. We are still actively accepting applications from residents in need of repair work resulting from Hurricanes Helene and Milton. If your home has been impacted by these storms, we encourage you to reach out and apply for assistance through our website: RTGFL.org/get-help.

The theme of the May 28th event was clear: resilience is paramount. Representatives from Rebuilding Together Greater Florida and our community partners spoke passionately about the urgent need to fortify homes before hurricane season strikes. By investing in proactive repairs, particularly for vulnerable homeowners, seniors, and families with special needs, we are working to build stronger, more protected neighborhoods.

Mei Hillard, a longtime supporter of vulnerable families herself, shared her personal experience and gratitude. Her home, where she lives with her adult son, suffered significant flood damage during recent hurricanes. We will be providing critical repairs, including addressing subfloor instability with flooring replacement, replacing damaged windows and baseboards, repairing her bathroom vanity, and ensuring essential safety measures like smoke alarm installation are in place.

“At Rebuilding Together Greater Florida, resilience means more than weathering the storm—it means preparing for it,” stated Jose Garcia, CEO of Rebuilding Together Greater Florida. “This event underscores the critical importance of proactive home repairs, especially for vulnerable homeowners, seniors, and families with special needs. By fortifying homes now, we’re not only safeguarding lives but also reinforcing the strength and unity of our communities.”

For Mei, receiving this support from an organization she admires is deeply meaningful. “I’ve always believed in showing up for our community,” she said. “Now, I’m grateful that Rebuilding Together is showing up for me. I’m excited to help share their mission with my neighbors.”

Mei’s story is not an isolated one. We are also actively involved in providing repair work for another St. Petersburg resident, Carol Williams. Hurricanes Helene and Milton left Carol’s family home damaged and unlivable, leading her to seek help from Rebuilding Together. For Carol, the work we do goes beyond just fixing physical structures; it’s about restoring a sense of safety, dignity, and the possibility of having a home again.

This kickoff event in St. Petersburg marks the first in a series of hurricane-related initiatives that Rebuilding Together Greater Florida will be hosting throughout the summer across our service area, including Tampa, Fort Myers, Sarasota, and Orlando. Through collaborative efforts with community residents and local leaders, we remain dedicated to identifying critical needs and rebuilding safe, healthy, and resilient homes and neighborhoods throughout Greater Florida.

If you or someone you know in the Tampa Bay area needs assistance with hurricane-related home repairs from Hurricanes Helene or Milton, please visit RTGFL.org/get-help to learn more and apply. Together, we can build a more resilient future for our communities.

Our workshop, WS134: Rebuilding Together – Strategies for Sustainable Disaster Recovery Across Florida, focused on real-world solutions and long-term strategies to help communities recover stronger after disasters.

This year’s conference theme, “Enduring Together – Persevering with Purpose,” could not have been more timely. Following the historic 2024 Atlantic hurricane season—marked by three major Florida landfalls (Hurricanes Debby, Helene, and Milton)—RTGFL joined hundreds of emergency management professionals to share lessons learned, foster collaboration, and strengthen our state’s resilience efforts.

Our session highlighted RTGFL’s on-the-ground experience supporting vulnerable families in both rural and urban communities, and emphasized the importance of equity, collaboration, and sustainability in disaster recovery.

We are proud to stand with our fellow emergency management partners to ensure every Floridian has a safe, healthy home—before and after disaster strikes.

National Rebuilding Month 2025 https://rtgfl.org/national-rebuilding-month-2025/ https://rtgfl.org/national-rebuilding-month-2025/#respond Sun, 27 Apr 2025 09:00:00 +0000 https://rtgfl.org/?p=3650 April is National Rebuilding Month — Here’s How We Made It Count

At Rebuilding Together Greater Florida (RTGFL), National Rebuilding Month is more than a calendar event—it’s a time when we come together with volunteers, partners, and communities to make real, lasting impact.

This April, we proudly led three major projects across Florida, partnering with Stewart Title, United Way of Lee, Hendry, and Glades + Team Depot, and Lockheed Martin to repair homes, restore dignity, and rebuild hope.

🛠 Project 1: Stewart Title Volunteers Support Mr. Croker

Restoring the Home of Army Veteran Robert Croker
📍 Orlando, FL | April 4, 2025

On April 4, we kicked off National Rebuilding Month in Orlando, joining Stewart Title to revitalize the home of Robert Croker, a 72-year-old Army veteran and lifelong resident of the community.

Robert’s home required critical repairs, including a new roof, kitchen and bathroom replacements, plumbing, and HVAC work. Thanks to $15,000 from Stewart Title and additional support from funding through Orange County for our Safe and Healthy Homes: Safe at Home program, we were able to provide these essential upgrades.

While contractors handled the heavy lifting inside, Stewart Title volunteers painted and landscaped the property—bringing new life and pride to Robert’s home.

🌱 Project 2: United Way + Team Depot

Beautifying the Harlem Heights Community Resource Center
📍 Fort Myers, FL | April 16, 2025

Mid-month, we partnered with United Way of Lee, Hendry, and Glades and Team Depot to revitalize a key community space in Harlem Heights. Volunteers transformed the United Way building into a more vibrant, welcoming environment for staff and the families they serve.

Volunteer-led improvements included:

  • Construction of two 10×12 gazebos
  • A new butterfly garden and raised herb planters
  • Painting of picnic tables, curbs, and staff break room
  • Landscaping, mulching, and curb appeal enhancements

With $9,000 in gift cards from The Home Depot, this team effort created a space that uplifts and strengthens the community—just as it’s intended to do.

🏡 Project 3: Lockheed Martin Volunteers Support the Owens Family

Home Repairs and Beautification for Retired Army National Guard Member
📍 Orlando, FL | April 25, 2025

We ended the month on a high note by serving Michael and Jeanette Owens at their longtime home in Orlando’s Fairview Shores neighborhood.

Michael, a U.S. Army National Guard veteran, and Jeanette, a former Lockheed Martin employee, have lived in their 1959-built home for over 25 years. Now retired, they enjoy spending time with their grandchildren and giving back through their church.

With support from Lockheed Martin volunteers, we focused on painting and landscaping—including trimming trees, removing invasive plants, and adding mulch to flower beds.

In addition, a skilled team of contractors completed a wide range of critical repairs, including:

  • Roof replacement
  • Electrical and lighting upgrades
  • Drywall repair and insulation
  • HVAC duct assessment
  • Pressure washing and soft wash of exterior
  • Window glass replacement
  • New water heater and plumbing in exterior utility room
  • Junk removal and garage panel upgrades
  • Extermination for insects and pests

Michael shared, “I can’t really put into words how thankful I am. Living paycheck to paycheck and being able to receive this help is God sent. I am extremely grateful.”

Rebuilding More Than Homes

From restoring individual homes to revitalizing community spaces, our three April projects are powerful reminders of what’s possible when people come together to serve others. Whether it’s a coat of paint or a new roof, every task contributes to a safer, healthier life for our neighbors.

To our incredible partners—Stewart Title, United Way of Lee, Hendry, and Glades, Team Depot, and Lockheed Martin—thank you for showing what it means to build up your community.

Two Neighbors, a Lifetime of Friendship, and a Rebuilt Future for Newtown https://rtgfl.org/two-neighbors-a-lifetime-of-friendship-and-a-rebuilt-future-for-newtown/ https://rtgfl.org/two-neighbors-a-lifetime-of-friendship-and-a-rebuilt-future-for-newtown/#respond Sat, 15 Feb 2025 05:00:00 +0000 http://67b77dfdefd67e3d7e2969e1 Joyce Lyons and Mary Williams Moore have been more than just neighbors in the Newtown community of Sarasota. They’ve been confidantes, support systems, and the embodiment of the enduring power of community.

Lyons, 73, has considered her home a sanctuary for more than 55 years. With a lifetime of memories etched within its walls, the house, however, was beginning to show its age. Water damage threatened the flooring, creating trip hazards, and the roof, weathered by time, leaked ominously. As a retiree living on Social Security Income, major repairs felt like an insurmountable obstacle.

Next door, Mary, a cancer survivor navigating the complexities of her health with the support of a cardiologist, faces similar challenges. Her home, a source of comfort since the seventies, now requires critical attention. The roof needed urgent replacement, areas in the ceiling began to show the scars of past leaks. Her air conditioning system, a lifeline in the Florida heat, desperately needs cleaning and potential replacement. Living alone, Mary’s safety within her own home was a growing concern.

These two women, bound by the threads of shared history and unwavering faith, found themselves facing an everyday challenge: aging homes are beginning to threaten their comfort, safety, and independence.

Recognizing the urgent need, Rebuilding Together Tampa Bay stepped in. Through the generous support of the Charles & Margery Barancik Foundation, Community Foundation of Sarasota County, and Gulf Coast Community Foundation crucial funding is secured for disaster relief and recovery efforts for the Newtown Community.

The assistance will ensure much-needed repairs such as a new roof, improved flooring and other vital safety upgrades. This type of work reaffirms the invaluable contributions of community pillars coming together, supporting those who are in need.

Joyce and Mary are very grateful for their new roofs, a reality made possible by the invaluable support of Rebuilding Together Tampa Bay and the giving contributions of the Charles & Margery Barancik Foundation, Community Foundation of Sarasota County, and Gulf Coast Community Foundation.

As Joyce and Mary anticipate the ongoing positive changes resulting from this assistance, one certainty remains: their long standing friendship is a testament to the strength of the Newtown community, and will continue to thrive within homes that are now safe.

Since the hurricanes hit, our team has been working tirelessly to provide critical repairs, ensuring that families have safe, stable housing as they continue to rebuild their lives. But our journey doesn’t stop here. While we celebrate this recognition, we remain steadfast in our commitment to long-term recovery. We’re determined to keep repairing homes, supporting communities, and making sure families have a solid foundation for years to come.

This recognition was further amplified by TIME’s 2024 Dreamer of the Year honor, which we’re incredibly proud of. It’s a testament to the tireless work of our dedicated team and the unwavering support of our partners, volunteers, and the communities we serve.

We couldn’t have reached this point without you, and we look forward to continuing our journey together to strengthen Florida, one home at a time.

Building Resilience Through Disaster Recovery with University Area CDC https://rtgfl.org/building-resilience-through-disaster-recovery-with-university-area-cdc/ https://rtgfl.org/building-resilience-through-disaster-recovery-with-university-area-cdc/#respond Fri, 24 Jan 2025 05:00:00 +0000 http://679686f67740aac321babdce When hurricanes devastate communities, the road to recovery needs more than repairs—it demands a shared commitment to rebuilding stronger. We joined forces with the University Area Community Development Corporation (University Area CDC) to repair hurricane-damaged spaces and strengthen a community’s ability to withstand future challenges.

University Area CDC empowers Tampa residents through innovative programs, strategic partnerships, and community-focused development initiatives. This partnership focuses on restoring vital community spaces, ensuring they remain safe, functional, and prepared for the future.

Here’s a look at the key projects we were able to complete together:

Golden Palms (11720 N 12th St, Tampa)

This property faced significant damage, with fallen trees and debris compromising the roof. RTTB quickly installed a protective tarp and cleared the debris. Repairs included replacing truss units, reroofing, and addressing damaged ductwork, electrical systems, and drywall. Our efforts aimed to restore not just the structure but also the sense of stability for the residents who call Golden Palms home.

Cultural Campus Offices (1916 E 136th Ave, Offices A and B)

Flooding left this site heavily damaged and unusable. The RTTB team stepped in to remove water-damaged materials, reinstall drywall, and add new flooring. We also replaced the doors, baseboards, and gave the offices a fresh coat of paint. As of now, these spaces are ready to serve the community once again, exemplifying how recovery efforts can breathe new life into critical facilities.

Restore Hope Duplex (12319 N 9th St)

While smaller in scope, this project addressed a crucial need by repairing ceiling drywall damaged by the storm. Ensuring safe and habitable housing is a cornerstone of building resilience.

A Collaborative Approach to Recovery

“Our work with University Area CDC highlights the power of partnerships in driving meaningful change,” said Jose Garcia, CEO of RTTB. “These projects are about more than repairing buildings—they’re about creating spaces where the community can thrive, even in the face of adversity.”

Sarah Combs, executive director and CEO of University Area CDC, emphasized the importance of this collaboration: “Hurricane Milton tested our community’s strength, and RTTB was there to help us rise to the challenge. Their quick action ensured roofs were repaired and water damage was addressed, allowing us to continue providing safe, stable housing and essential services. Together, we’re not just rebuilding—we’re building resilience. We’re incredibly grateful for their unwavering dedication and partnership.”

Turning Challenges Into Opportunities

Through a shared mission, we are demonstrating how disaster recovery can pave the way for stronger, more resilient communities. By addressing urgent needs while planning for the future, we are helping Tampa neighborhoods rebuild and withstand future challenges.

Winter Safety Tips for Florida Homeowners https://rtgfl.org/winter-safety-tips-for-florida-homeowners/ https://rtgfl.org/winter-safety-tips-for-florida-homeowners/#respond Tue, 14 Jan 2025 16:14:06 +0000 http://678686362dc8952d1447facb As temperatures start to drop during Florida’s winter months, keeping a safe and warm home becomes a priority. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, income-eligible households are more likely to face energy insecurity, meaning they struggle to afford adequate heating during colder months. This can lead to higher rates of cold-related illnesses, especially among the elderly and young children. On top of everything else, this year is still a recovery phase for some homeowners after the devastating hurricane season.

However, preparing a home for cold weather does not have to break the bank.

Following these practical, affordable tips could protect your home and family this season.

1. Weather Seal The Home

Picture courtesy of the Department of Energy.

Are cool drafts making your heating system work harder? Take a look at your windows and doors for gaps where air could enter. To fix this, use weatherstripping or caulk to seal the area. These simple fixes could help conserve energy and reduce your utility bills.

Need supplies? Visit your local Lowe’s to grab everything you need for this project.

Picture courtesy of Rebuilding Together National Affiliate.

And while you’re there, participate in the Lowe’s Round Up Campaign to support programs like Rebuilding Together that repair homes, revitalize communities, and rebuild lives for families in need.

2. Inspect The Heating System

If you use a central heating system or space heaters, give them a test run before temperatures drop unexpectedly. According to the Upholstered Furniture Action Council (UFAC), 52,000 fires are caused by heating equipment on a yearly basis. For homeowners with a space heater, please make sure you place them at least 3 feet away from anything that could catch fire, and never leave them running when you are not at home.

3. Check Your Roof and Gutters

Rainy winter days can lead to costly water damage if your roof isn’t in good shape. Especially after the hurricane season Florida homeowners experienced. In October 2024, Hurricane Milton, a Category 5 storm, caused severe damage. Tampa saw over a foot of rain. Now is the time to inspect for loose shingles or leaks, and clear gutters of debris to avoid blockages.

4. Protect The Water Lines

While freezing pipes is not as common in Florida, sudden cold fronts can still cause unnecessary issues. We recommend wrapping any pipes exposed to cold air using foam insulation. This will prevent freezing and potential bursting.

5. Practice Safe Holiday Decorating

Use LED lights that are energy-efficient and will cost less on your electric bill. To reduce fire risks, check holiday light cords for any common wear and tear. And do not overload any electrical outlets with multiple strings of lights.

6. Prepare for Cold Snaps

Wash your extra blankets and warm layers for those chilly nights. In case of extreme cold conditions, get familiar with local warming shelters. It is always good to have a back up plan, just in case.

7. Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Winter is the peak season for house fires. Test your detectors monthly and replace batteries as needed to ensure your family is safe from smoke and carbon monoxide dangers.

8. Save on Energy Bills

Use ceiling fans in a clockwise direction on a low speed to push warm air down into the living spaces. Close off unused rooms so the heat can concentrate in the areas where it’s needed most.

9. Avoid Heating with Your Oven

Never use your oven to heat your home. This can lead to dangerous carbon monoxide buildup and is not an energy-efficient solution.

10. Utilize Community Resources, Like Us!

Picture courtesy of Rebuilding Together National Affiliate.

Many local nonprofits, including Rebuilding Together Tampa Bay (RTTB), offer resources to help with home sealing and heating assistance. Reach out to us or your utility provider to learn more about available programs.

By following these winter safety tips, you can protect your home, stay comfortable, and save money this season. RTTB is here to help families create safe and healthy homes year-round.
